Resolved Question: Chicken pox, shingles, babies, oh my....
So my 13 year old cousin came down with shingles...he's been around my 9 month old daughter....my question is does she have a chance of getting chicken pox or is it a mandate to get a chicken pox vaccine at birth (thats what my sister in law told me they do now)...if she gets it, it won't be the end of the world. Also, Ive heard it's dangerous for pregnant women to be around people with shingles because it's an airborne virus and it can affect the fetus. I am currently 7 weeks pregnant, but Ive had the chickenpox. Since I personally have immunity, will that go for my unborn child as well? Any one had information or links, that would be so helpful! I dont have time right now to look up the information (we have company over). Follow-up to question: "Can you get chickenpox (not the shingles) twice or more?" There's pervasive mis-information pushed by the public AND the medical establishment that you "can't catch chicken pox twice" (Emphasis on catch, not re-activate our reservoir of virus as shingles.) How many of you know there are multiple virus genotypes, similar yet slightly different? How many knew that when you do catch it a 2nd time, it's usually milder case? How many knew that you can still catch one of these genotypes after much earlier exposure? Vaccination? How many of you knew non-vaccinated, non-exposed persons age 15+ can DIE if they're sickened by younger persons w/the chicken pox? How many know that between age 18 and 85 we have a 50% chance of developing shingles? How many knew vaccines given to previously exposed older people (say, 50+) can reduce the incidence of developing shingles? Should my elderly parents receive it? My mother has already had shingles and my father has never had shingles. They have receved contradictory information from their family doctor and his nurse and are now confused. The cost for the vaccine is around $300.00. more
